Pierre Diard didn't set out with a long-term plan to own a mechanical workshop, but when the opportunity to purchase Ultra Tune Fyshwick arose five years ago, he recognised it was too good to ignore. Since then, he's focused on steadily growing the business while building a workplace where both customers and staff feel supported. What stood out most in Pierre's story was his thoughtful approach to leadership and his willingness to prepare for an industry undergoing one of its biggest transformations in decades.
Ultra Tune Fyshwick has been serving Canberra motorists for more than a decade, with Pierre Diard taking ownership of the business five years ago after an unexpected opportunity presented itself.
Originally trained as a mechanic in Europe, Pierre has worked in the automotive industry for more than 20 years. While he and his family had originally planned a very different future after moving to Australia, the chance to purchase the workshop changed their direction entirely.
Today, Ultra Tune services almost every passenger vehicle brand, supporting private motorists alongside a small number of fleet customers. As the automotive industry continues shifting towards hybrid and electric vehicles, Pierre is investing in specialised equipment, staff training, and new capabilities to ensure the business is ready for the next generation of vehicle servicing.
"It's never been one big decision. It's been lots of little improvements that gradually move the business forward."
Rather than chasing dramatic growth, Pierre's philosophy centres on consistency. He speaks proudly about creating a workplace where his team enjoys coming to work, while also recognising that finding qualified technicians remains one of the industry's biggest ongoing challenges.
With technology changing rapidly and electric vehicles becoming more common, Pierre sees adaptation—not disruption—as the key to long-term success.
How did you become the owner of Ultra Tune Fyshwick?
It wasn't really planned. The opportunity came up when the previous owner decided to sell, and my circumstances at the time allowed me to take it.
What are you most proud of?
My staff are happy to work with me. That's probably the thing I'm most proud of because the business supports not only my family, but theirs as well.
What's been the biggest challenge?
Finding qualified staff. It's one of the biggest challenges across the whole industry.
What has helped the business grow?
I don't think there's been one big game changer. It's been a matter of making lots of little improvements over time.
What are you working on improving right now?
Preparing the workshop for hybrid and electric vehicles through training, equipment, and investment.
What do you see as the biggest challenge ahead?
The automotive industry is changing quickly. Internal combustion engines and electric vehicles require completely different servicing models.
What would success look like over the next few years?
If businesses like ours are still competitive and operating successfully in five years' time despite all the industry changes, that'll be a real achievement.
One thing that stood out in Pierre's story was that business growth isn't always about chasing bigger numbers. Sometimes it's about preparing early for changes that haven't fully arrived yet. Across many established Canberra businesses, we're seeing leaders invest in skills, technology and capability well before customer demand forces them to. Those quieter decisions often become the ones that protect businesses over the long term.
