What inspired you to start Table Tennis Collective?
There was only one club in Canberra, and it had limitations in terms of space and accessibility. We saw a strong opportunity to open up the sport and create something more inclusive, while still building a sustainable business.
What are you most proud of so far?
The inclusiveness. We’ve created a space where people of all ages and abilities feel welcome from para sessions to ladies-only coaching. People don’t feel left out or overwhelmed, and that community feeling is something we will always protect.
What has been one of the biggest challenges?
Finding our rhythm as shareholders early on. It takes time to align different perspectives and build a shared way of working. It was a process, but a very productive one with open communication.
What decision has had the biggest impact on your growth?
Removing the requirement for membership. Allowing walk-ins and creating a more open model has made the sport more accessible and helped us reach a much broader audience.
What has become more complex as the business has grown?
Managing relationships with players, staff, and the broader community. As more people come in, it becomes important to balance openness with maintaining standards and culture.
What are you currently working on improving?
We’re developing an upstairs space into a spectator and lounge area, and expanding our junior training camps during school holidays to create more structured development opportunities.
What does success look like over the next 12 months?
From a financial perspective, reaching break-even would be a strong milestone. At the same time, increasing participation in competitions both local and national is important for us.
