Amanda Delaney is the founder of Red District, a Canberra-based pole dance studio creating a space that blends fitness, confidence, and community. Open to adults of all backgrounds, the studio attracts both those inside and outside the industry who are looking for something more than a typical class environment. What stands out about Red District is its commitment to creating a space that feels inclusive, honest, and grounded in the roots of pole, while also building a strong sense of belonging in the Canberra community.
Red District was built from a clear intention to create something that did not yet exist in Canberra. Drawing on her own experience within the industry, Amanda Delaney set out to build a studio that felt inclusive, supportive, and grounded in authenticity.
The studio offers a broad range of classes, from strength and conditioning through to performance-based sessions focused on confidence and self-expression. While many studios focus purely on fitness, Red District takes a wider approach — creating an environment where people can challenge themselves, connect with others, and explore something new in a way that feels safe and welcoming.
“We wanted people to walk in feeling accepted exactly as they are — not like they had something to prove.”
From the beginning, community has been central to the business. That has naturally attracted a diverse mix of clients, including those wanting to improve fitness, build confidence, or simply find a sense of connection.
What has emerged is a space where people feel comfortable showing up without judgement, regardless of experience or ability.
As the business has grown, it has become increasingly clear that Canberra is looking for more spaces like this — environments that balance structure with flexibility and place just as much value on the experience as the outcome.
What does Red District offer and who is it for?
We are a pole dance studio that is open to anyone over 18. A lot of people come to build confidence, get fit, or just try something new. It is also a strong community space.
Why did you start the business?
I wanted to create something that felt more inclusive and reflective of the industry. There were not many spaces that felt like that, so I wanted to build one.
What are you most proud of so far?
Definitely the community. We recently held our first showcase and it was such a supportive, judgement-free environment. It showed how much people needed a space like this.
What has been one of the biggest challenges?
Advertising. We want to stay authentic to who we are, but there are limits on how and where we can promote. Finding ways to get exposure has been a challenge.
What decision has made a big difference to the business?
Leaning fully into what we are. We have not tried to water it down. That has meant the people who come in already understand and connect with what we offer.
What are you working on improving right now?
Converting more casual visitors into members. We have strong interest, so it is about building consistency.
What would success look like over the next 12 months?
Reaching around 150 members would be a strong milestone for us.
What needs to happen to get there?
More awareness. We need to reach more people outside of our current networks and continue building visibility.
One thing that stood out here was how deliberately Amanda chose to build Red District around community first, rather than simply offering classes. That decision has shaped everything from how the studio operates to the type of clients it attracts.
