For Alison King, insurance has never been just about policies and premiums.

As Branch Manager of PSC Insurance Brokers, Alison works with businesses across Canberra and beyond to help them understand risk, protect what they have built, and make informed decisions about their future. From construction companies and community organisations through to professional services firms, cafés and clubs, the work is ultimately about giving business owners confidence to focus on growth.

What stood out in this conversation was not just Alison’s experience in the insurance industry, but her perspective on leadership, culture and navigating change while keeping people at the centre of the business.

About The Business

PSC Insurance Brokers helps businesses manage risk through tailored insurance solutions, risk management advice and broader business protection services.

Alison has spent almost 20 years in the insurance industry, entering the profession straight out of school through an administrative role. What initially appealed to her was the opportunity for ongoing professional development and a clear pathway for growth.

That pathway eventually led to a leadership position within one of the largest insurance brokerage networks in Australia.

“Culture is one of those things you don’t fully appreciate until you’re responsible for protecting it.”

While growth has created new opportunities, it has also reinforced the importance of maintaining strong local relationships and preserving the culture that clients and team members value.

The business works with organisations across a wide range of industries, helping them identify risks, understand their options and implement practical solutions that protect both their operations and long-term goals.

Alongside insurance broking, the team also supports clients through risk management, workplace health and safety services and broader advisory support designed to help businesses operate with greater confidence.

For Alison, one of the most important parts of leading through growth has been ensuring the business continues to feel collaborative, supportive and connected, even as the organisation evolves.

At its core, PSC Insurance Brokers is built on professionalism, trust and long-term relationships — helping businesses protect what they have built while giving them the confidence to focus on the future.

Q&A with Alison

What does PSC Insurance Brokers do and who do you help?

We’re an insurance brokerage and we help commercial clients manage their risk and insurance portfolio. A lot of our work involves identifying risks, helping businesses understand their options and deciding whether insurance is the right solution or whether there are other risk management strategies that may be more appropriate.

How did you get started in the insurance industry?

This is my twentieth year in insurance. Like many people, I finished school without a clear idea of what I wanted to do. I applied for administrative roles and one happened to be within an insurance brokerage. What appealed to me was the opportunity to continue learning and developing professionally. I’ve stayed ever since.

What are you most proud of?

The culture we’ve built.

We genuinely work as a team. People support each other, there’s no judgement and everyone brings different strengths to the table. It’s a really positive environment to come to every day.

What has been one of the biggest challenges since moving into a leadership role?

The transition from being someone’s peer to becoming their leader.

There’s also the tendency to compare yourself to previous leaders and feel like you need to do things exactly the same way they did. Learning to lead in your own style while still supporting the team has been one of the biggest adjustments.

What decision had the biggest impact on the organisation’s growth?

Growth through acquisition has played a significant role.

The business expanded from a single office in Wagga into a much larger national organisation through strategic acquisitions. That growth created opportunities for development, resources and career progression that may not otherwise have existed.

What are you focused on improving right now?

We’ve recently implemented a restructure to better align team members with clients and create more development opportunities for staff. The goal is to ensure clients are supported by the right people while also helping our team continue to grow their skills and capabilities.

As the business has grown, what has become more complicated?

Maintaining culture.

Whenever businesses grow, merge or evolve, preserving what people value about the workplace becomes increasingly important. Bringing different teams and ways of working together requires ongoing attention and communication.

What will tell you things are going well over the next 12 months?

Revenue growth remains important, particularly in a challenging insurance market.

At the same time, staff retention and maintaining a strong culture are equally important measures of success. Keeping good people engaged and creating an environment where they want to stay is a key focus.

One thing that stood out

One pattern that regularly appears across established Canberra businesses is that growth often creates new leadership challenges rather than simply bigger operational challenges.

What stood out in Alison’s story was the focus on preserving culture while navigating organisational change. Whether growth comes through acquisition, expansion or new leadership responsibilities, the businesses that maintain trust, communication and team engagement are often the ones that navigate change most successfully. It’s a reminder that sustainable growth is rarely just about numbers; it is also about people.

If your business is reviewing its insurance arrangements or looking to better understand risk management, PSC Insurance Brokers is worth connecting with.
