Martin Notaras, owner of Notaras Motorsport & Fyshwick Exhaust, has built a Canberra business grounded in hands-on craftsmanship and a deep connection to motorsport.

Working with everyone from truck operators to car enthusiasts, the business focuses on custom fabrication and exhaust systems that can’t simply be bought off the shelf. What makes this business worth paying attention to is its commitment to doing the job properly, even as costs rise and the industry becomes more complex.

About The Business

Notaras Motorsport & Fyshwick Exhaust sits at the intersection of practical trade work and performance-focused engineering. While many workshops focus on standard parts and quick installations, Martin has built his business around fabrication — creating custom solutions for vehicles that don’t have off-the-shelf options.

The business serves a broad range of customers, from commercial operators needing work on large trucks and buses, through to enthusiasts modifying older or unique vehicles. This variety has become part of the appeal, with no two jobs looking quite the same.

“We don’t chase volume. We focus on doing the job properly, especially

when there’s no off-the-shelf solution.”

Martin’s background in professional motorcycle racing played a significant role in shaping the business. What began as working on his own vehicles gradually turned into requests from others, eventually growing into a full-time operation. Over time, the business has evolved into a workshop known for taking on work others often avoid — particularly complex or highly customised jobs.

Rather than chasing volume, the focus has remained on quality and reputation. Each job is approached with the mindset that it needs to be done properly before it leaves the workshop, reinforcing trust with customers and driving consistent word-of-mouth growth.

Q&A with Martin

What do you do and who do you help?

We’re an exhaust shop, but we also do motorsport work and a lot of fabrication. We make our own systems, mainly for vehicles where you can’t just buy parts — older cars, modified cars, trucks and buses.

What are you most proud of?

Still being here after nearly 14 years. Things have gotten tougher, but we’ve managed to keep going. Also the feedback from customers when they’re really happy with the work.

What decision has made the biggest difference?

Making sure the work is right before it leaves. If it’s not right, it doesn’t go out. That’s what’s built our reputation.

What does success look like in the next 12 months?
Just enjoying what we do, paying the bills, and still wanting to come to work.

What inspired you to start the business?

I’ve always been into motorsport. I raced bikes professionally for years, then moved into cars. It started with working on my own vehicles, then people began asking for help, and it grew from there.

What has been the biggest challenge?

The cost of running a business now. Materials have gone up significantly, and everything we use is imported, so you’re dealing with price increases you can’t control.

What advice would you give other business owners?
Stick it out. It takes time to work out what you should and shouldn’t be doing. Don’t take on every job just because you need the money — it usually creates bigger problems later.

One thing that stood out

One thing that stood out here is the discipline around saying no. Many Canberra businesses reach a point where taking on every job starts to create more pressure than progress. What Martin has done — narrowing the type of work he accepts and focusing on quality — is often what stabilises both reputation and operations over time.

If you’re looking for custom fabrication or exhaust work, this is a business built on doing things properly.
