Why did you decide to start your own business?
I was experienced enough, so I thought, just give it a go. I had nothing to lose. I thought I’d try something adventurous while I’m still young.
What was one of the biggest challenges early on?
The biggest challenge is uncertainty of leads and what the future holds. I’ve never been in business before, so everything was new to me — especially all the admin and back-of-house side of things.
Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently?
I would have structured my business better from the beginning. I just wanted to get started, but I probably should have planned out what the next five years might look like.
What has been the most effective way to generate work?
Word of mouth has been the strongest. But getting featured in The Canberra Times really helped. A lot of people over 50 reached out from that article, while younger clients tend to find me online or through Instagram.
What do you want people to think of when they hear Jean Architects?
I want people to come to me because they love my design and what I do. I don’t just want to be one of the architecture firms in Canberra.
What’s the biggest challenge right now?
Time. I’ve taken on too many projects at once and I’ve been struggling to manage them all properly. I’ve been working longer hours than I should.
What needs to change moving forward?
I need to work out how many projects I can realistically handle at once and structure things better. Otherwise it’s not sustainable for me.
