Who They Help: Beginners to intermediate clients looking to build strength, fitness, and confidence

Clint Hartley, owner of Hybrid Performance Gym, has built something that looks very different to the traditional gym experience in Canberra. Focused on everyday people rather than elite athletes, Hybrid supports beginners through to experienced members with a mix of small group and one-on-one coaching.
What stands out isn’t just the programming, but the environment — a place where people feel comfortable starting, returning, and staying.
Hybrid Performance Gym didn’t begin with a polished plan. It started as a response to uncertainty and opportunity. After working within a larger gym environment, Clint and his business partner saw a chance to create something more personal — a space that prioritised coaching quality and client experience over scale.
Originally focused on strength, the business evolved quickly once real clients came through the door. People weren’t just looking to lift heavier weights — they wanted to feel better, move better, manage injuries, and keep up with everyday life.
"That shift shaped Hybrid into what it is today: a flexible, coaching-led environment tailored to individual goals."
Rather than forcing clients into a fixed system, Hybrid adapts to the person in front of them. That might mean strength work, mobility, conditioning, or simply helping someone get back on the floor to play with their kids without pain.
What’s been built is not just a gym, but a space where people feel supported at different stages of life — and where coaching is shaped around the individual, not the other way around.
What do you do and who do you help?
We work mostly with beginner to intermediate clients. For a lot of people, it’s their first gym or their first time back in a while. We do small groups and one-on-one coaching, and everyone’s goals are a bit different.
What are you most proud of?
The people. You see members showing up for each other outside the gym — helping each other move house, supporting each other through tough times. That’s bigger than anything we do on the gym floor.
What’s one decision that made a difference?
Getting comfortable being more visible in the business and starting to build a team around that.
What are you working on improving right now?
Turning what’s in my head into systems. Making things more structured so coaches can deliver a consistent experience while still keeping their own style.
Why did you start the business?
It came from working in another gym where we had a great team, but it didn’t feel like we had full ownership. When a couple of key people left, it made us think maybe we could build something ourselves. It started small and grew from there.
What was one of the hardest parts early on?
Stepping into a more visible role. I was always comfortable behind the scenes, so becoming more of the face of the business took some adjustment.
What’s become more complicated as the business has grown?
Everything. It’s not just coaching anymore — there’s social media, relationships, marketing. You’re always on in some way.
What will success look like over the next 12 months?
The coaches feeling more confident taking clients through the full journey — from onboarding through to programming.
What stands out here is the shift from coaching as a personal craft to coaching as a system that others can deliver. This is a transition many Canberra business owners navigate as they grow — where the quality of the business becomes less about what the owner can personally deliver, and more about how well that standard can be translated across a team without losing what made it work in the first place.
If you’re looking for a supportive, coaching-led gym environment, Hybrid Performance Gym is worth exploring.
