For more than two decades, Peter Anderson has built Dent Solutions into a trusted name for paintless dent repair in Canberra. Based in Fyshwick, the business specialises in repairing hail damage and vehicle dents without repainting, helping car owners preserve their factory finish while avoiding more invasive repair work. What stood out in Peter’s story was the balance between craftsmanship, family life, and the realities of running a highly specialised business in an industry shaped by insurance companies, contractor networks, and unpredictable demand.
Dent Solutions focuses on paintless dent repair — a specialised repair method that removes dents and hail damage without the need for repainting. While the business handles smaller dents and dealership work, its primary focus has always been hail damage repairs, an area Peter says delivers the strongest commercial return for the business.
Peter started the business after spending around 20 years working shift work with Ansett Airlines. When Ansett collapsed in 2001, the uncertainty became the push he needed to pursue something of his own in the automotive industry. He purchased a franchise that included training and support before eventually continuing independently under the Dent Solutions name.
“This business paid off our mortgage and helped raise our four kids — that’s probably what I’m most proud of.”
Over the years, the business has evolved from a single van operation into an established workshop in Fyshwick. Peter has also travelled extensively across Australia and internationally completing hail damage repair work as a contractor, including jobs in Germany, France, and Oman.
Today, Dent Solutions remains a family-run operation, with Peter’s son Brent working alongside him. During major hail events, the business expands quickly by bringing in trusted contractors Peter has worked with over many years in the industry.
One of the clearest themes throughout Peter’s story was consistency. Rather than chasing rapid expansion, the business has focused on maintaining quality repairs, protecting relationships, and building a reputation that generates repeat work over the long term.
What inspired you to start the business?
I used to work for Ansett Airlines out at the airport, and after about 20 years of shift work, I got a bit over it. I wanted to do something in the automotive industry but something niche. When Ansett collapsed in 2001, that was really the push to go and do it.
What was the hardest part in the early days?
Learning the skill. It’s very difficult to learn how to do what we do. You go through self-doubt constantly on repairs when you’re starting out. You’re asking yourself whether you can actually do it.
What are you most proud of?
I’m proud that this business has given my family a decent upbringing. It’s paid off our mortgage, and our four kids have been brought up from this business.
What has helped the business build its reputation?
Quality repairs. We focus heavily on quality, not just with the dent repairs but everything around it. We’ve repaired thousands of cars and had very few issues.
How has the industry changed over time?
A lot of insurance companies now use national repairers who travel around and set up temporarily after major hail events. That affects local repairers quite a bit because work gets redirected away from long-standing local businesses.
What does the business look like during busy periods?
When hail events happen, we bring contractors in and go from two people to around 12. We only use people we know and trust from years in the industry.
What’s your focus now?
At this stage, I’m getting close to retirement, so there’s a lot of thinking about what the future looks like for the business and what Brent wants to do with it.
One thing that stood out in Peter’s story was how many long-term Canberra businesses quietly survive because of consistency rather than constant growth. Dent Solutions has operated in a highly unpredictable industry where weather events, insurance decisions, and contractor networks all influence demand, yet the business has stayed grounded in quality work and long-standing relationships. It’s a reminder that for many established Canberra businesses, resilience often comes from staying reliable through changing market conditions rather than constantly reinventing the business model.
If you’re looking for experienced paintless dent repair in Canberra, Dent Solutions has built a strong reputation over more than 20 years in the industry.
