When Jane Yang started Cercis Property, the goal wasn’t to build the biggest agency in Canberra.
Instead, the focus was on creating a more tailored and responsive experience for property owners who wanted trusted advice, clear communication, and genuine care around one of their biggest assets.
What began as a small operation servicing a select group of clients has steadily grown through referrals, long-term relationships, and reputation. What stood out most in this conversation was Jane’s deep sense of responsibility — not just to clients, but also to the team she’s building around her.
Cercis Property was established with a simple idea: provide a more personalised and efficient property experience for clients who wanted better communication and stronger service.
Before starting the business, Jane Yang worked within larger corporate environments where she often saw bureaucracy, delays, and miscommunication affecting client outcomes. Over time, she realised many property owners weren’t necessarily looking for more process — they simply wanted someone they could trust to protect and manage their assets properly.
The business originally began servicing a smaller group of clients around Kingston Foreshore before gradually expanding into other Canberra areas through referrals and word of mouth.
From the beginning, Jane focused heavily on service quality and responsiveness. Rather than taking on every opportunity, Cercis Property built its reputation by committing fully to the work it accepted and prioritising fast, thorough communication throughout the process.
“Cercis Property was built on the belief that property owners don’t need
more process. They need someone they can genuinely trust.”
Like many businesses, Cercis Property faced major disruption during COVID. Jane recalled completing the business’s first office renovation only days before the pandemic changed how businesses operated across Canberra. Balancing staff wellbeing, client expectations, and operational continuity became one of the biggest early leadership challenges.
As the business grew, so did the complexity around leadership and delegation.
Jane spoke openly about the difficulty of moving from personally overseeing everything to trusting others with more responsibility. Learning that not every task needed to be completed perfectly — and that strong teams require different communication styles and support systems — became a major growth lesson.
Today, Cercis Property continues growing through reputation, long-term client trust, and a strong internal focus on supporting staff development, particularly for women building long-term careers within the real estate industry.
What inspired you to start Cercis Property?
I wanted to provide a more tailored service for clients. I’d worked in larger corporate environments and felt there was too much bureaucracy and wasted time when clients really just wanted the best outcome for their property.
What was one of the biggest challenges early on?
Our first office renovation finished and then COVID hit almost immediately. Balancing staff safety, client expectations, and continuing operations was very difficult.
Looking back, what would you do differently?
I would delegate earlier. At the start, I treated staff almost like kids and expected everyone to work exactly like I did. Over time I realised people work differently and sometimes 80 percent done well is enough.
What strategy helped the business grow the most?
Doing the extra mile for every client. If we take something on, we commit fully to it. That’s what creates trust and referrals.
What’s been your most effective marketing strategy?
Word of mouth. Marketing helps, but long-term trust and strong results are what bring people back and encourage referrals.
What’s the best business advice you’ve received?
Delegate more. Don’t try to do everything yourself.
What advice would you give someone starting a business today?
Know your figures properly. Even if you’re not naturally a numbers person, understanding forecasting and budgeting is very important.
What’s your vision for the future?
I want to help more people and continue supporting the team around me. For me it’s less about becoming bigger and more about helping people grow properly over the long term.
One thing that stood out in this conversation was how much long-term growth in service businesses depends on trust and consistency rather than scale alone.
Many Canberra businesses initially grow because owners personally carry everything themselves. But over time, sustainable growth often requires learning how to delegate, mentor, and build systems that allow the business to support both clients and staff more effectively.
This is a transition many established Canberra businesses eventually navigate as operational complexity increases.
If you’re looking for tailored property management or real estate support in Canberra, Cercis Property is worth exploring for its highly personalised approach.
