About The Business
CanFab Engineering has been part of Canberra’s manufacturing landscape since 1982, evolving through industry shifts, technology changes, and multiple generations of staff and leadership. Bill Viney joined the business as a 16-year-old apprentice welder when it operated under a different name before eventually becoming a business partner and later helping lead the company into its modern manufacturing model.
Today, CanFab Engineering works across a wide range of steel fabrication and manufacturing projects, supplying clients locally and interstate. While the business once operated heavily in construction site work, Bill says a major turning point came during the 1990s when the company deliberately shifted toward manufacturing and supply work after repeated issues with unreliable payment cycles in construction.
That decision shaped the future of the business.
Over time, CanFab invested heavily in automation, precision machinery, and manufacturing capability, allowing the company to produce everything from custom fabricated components to specialised data centre infrastructure and commercial steel products.
“One of the biggest decisions we made was getting out of construction work and focusing on manufacturing. That changed the business completely.”
Another standout part of Bill’s story was the focus on people. Many staff members have been with the business for well over a decade, and apprenticeships remain a core part of the company’s long-term thinking. Even as Bill prepares for retirement and succession planning, the focus remains on stability, capability, and passing knowledge on properly to the next generation.

How did you first get into the business?
I walked in there as a 16-year-old looking for a welding apprenticeship. I liked metalwork, and I’ve basically been here ever since.
What are you most proud of?
One of the things I’m proud of is employing people over the years. We’ve had a lot of long-term staff and apprentices who’ve stayed with us.
What was one of the hardest parts in the early years?
Time management. Back then we’d work on the floor all day and then do quoting and administration at night.
What was the biggest turning point for the business?
“Moving away from construction work into manufacturing. We got burnt too many times not being paid properly on construction jobs.”

What’s been one of the biggest challenges in recent years?
Competing with overseas manufacturing. The quality coming out of places like China now is much higher than it used to be, and it’s difficult to compete on price.”
What does success look like for you now?
Hopefully a four-day week and seeing the guys taking over the business flourish.
