Who They Help: Canberra four-wheel drive owners looking for accessories, upgrades, fitting, and automotive advice
Craig White has spent more than three decades in the tyre and automotive industry, but Action 4x4 came from recognising a growing need among Canberra four-wheel drive owners looking for trusted advice, quality accessories, and reliable installation work.
What began as a sideline to another automotive business has quickly grown into a specialised four-wheel-drive accessories company focused on helping customers customise and upgrade their vehicles with confidence.
What stood out most in this conversation was Craig’s willingness to commit fully once he sees an opportunity. Whether it was expanding into a second premises, growing teams rapidly, or backing himself in unfamiliar territory, Action 4x4 has been built on decisive action and long-term vision.
Action 4x4 was established in 2017 after Craig White identified increasing demand for four-wheel-drive accessories through his existing automotive business.
At the time, Craig was operating a successful Bridgestone service centre, but conversations with customers kept pointing toward a larger opportunity. Drivers were already visiting for wheels and tyres, but many also needed lift kits, bull bars, suspension upgrades, and other four-wheel-drive modifications.
Rather than referring customers elsewhere, Craig gradually expanded into the market himself.
“Action 4x4 was built by saying yes to opportunity and working through the
complexity that followed.”
What started as a small extension of the business quickly grew into a dedicated operation focused entirely on four-wheel-drive accessories and fitting. As demand increased, Action 4x4 eventually moved into its own premises in Kembla Street, allowing the business to grow independently while creating clearer separation between the two operations.
Craig openly acknowledges that growth came with pressure. Cash flow, staffing, financing, and operational complexity were all significant challenges during expansion. But throughout the conversation, one theme consistently emerged — a willingness to back himself and commit fully once a decision had been made.
That mindset has shaped the business at every stage.
Today, Action 4x4 continues growing through strong customer demand, supplier relationships, and reputation within Canberra’s four-wheel-drive community. Craig has also begun transitioning into the next stage of his career through automotive consulting work, while continuing to strengthen the business for the future.
What inspired you to start Action 4x4?
I’d been in the tyre and automotive industry for 35 years and had a lot of customers asking about four-wheel-drive accessories. It just kept progressing further and further until it almost doubled the business.
What are you most proud of?
Probably the growth of Action 4x4 itself. It started completely independently, and now we have suppliers approaching us wanting to work with us.
What was one of the biggest challenges early on?
Cash flow and financing. Wanting to grow faster than the cash flow allowed was definitely one of the biggest pressures.
What decision helped the business grow the most?
Bite off more than you can chew and then work it out later. Don’t be afraid to give things a go and don’t take no for an answer.
What’s the best business advice you’ve received?
Never say no too quickly. So many people’s first response is no, even when the answer isn’t really no.
What advice would you give other business owners?
Back yourself and commit properly. There’s no luck in business. You make your own luck through hard work and consistency.
What’s your vision for the future?
I’m moving into more consulting work now as part of my longer-term exit strategy, while continuing to build Action 4x4 into the business I want it to be.
One thing that stood out in this conversation was how much long-term business growth depends on an owner’s willingness to make difficult commitments before conditions feel completely comfortable.
Many Canberra businesses reach points where growth requires additional premises, larger teams, more systems, or increased financial pressure. The businesses that continue moving forward are often the ones where owners are prepared to make calculated decisions early and adapt as complexity increases around them.
This is a pattern that regularly appears in established Canberra businesses navigating expansion phases.
If you’re part of Canberra’s four-wheel-drive community, Action 4x4 is worth following for practical advice, upgrades, and experienced automotive support.
