Melissa Flanigan, the photographer behind A Shot Above The Rest, has built a Canberra business around capturing some of life’s most meaningful milestones. From weddings and engagements to newborns and family portraits, her work often follows clients through multiple stages of life.
What stands out is not just the longevity of those relationships, but the consistency behind them—years of showing up, refining her craft, and building trust within the Canberra community.
A Shot Above The Rest began with a simple but powerful moment—Melissa attending a wedding as an assistant and experiencing the energy of capturing something that couldn’t be repeated. That early exposure sparked a long-term commitment to photography, initially focused on weddings.
Over time, the business evolved. As Melissa’s clients moved through different life stages, she recognised a gap—her wedding clients were going elsewhere for newborn and family photography. That shift prompted her to expand into portrait work, gradually building a business that now spans engagements, weddings, maternity, newborns, and family sessions.
"This evolution wasn’t driven by strategy alone,
but by observation and connection. "
Melissa saw where her clients were going next and chose to grow with them.
A major turning point came when she moved the business out of her home and into a dedicated studio space. This allowed her to present the full scope of her work in one place, changing how clients understood the business and how she operated day-to-day. It marked a shift from a home-based operation to a more structured, visible Canberra business.
What do you love most about the work you do?
I get to see people through different stages of their lives. I might meet them when they’re engaged, photograph their wedding, and then later they come back for maternity and newborn photos. It’s really special to be part of that whole journey.
What’s something you’re really proud of?
Winning Photographer of the Year for my region two years in a row has been a big one. I’ve also placed in the top photographers nationally, which I’m really proud of, especially competing against much larger studios.
What decision made the biggest difference to your growth?
Moving out of home and into a studio. It changed how people saw the business and how I approached it. It made things more structured and gave me clear boundaries between work and home.
What’s one piece of advice for other business owners?
Be prepared for the long haul. There are always ups and downs, and you have to stick with it. Also, don’t limit yourself to just one thing—being flexible has been important for me..
What inspired you to start the business?
It started at a wedding I attended as an assistant. I was allowed to take a few photos, and I was completely hooked. Back then, you had to wait weeks to see your images, and I remember how excited I was to see what I’d created and how people reacted to it.
What was challenging in the early days?
Starting again in new locations was tough. When I moved to Canberra, no one knew who I was, and it took time to build recognition. It’s a market where relationships and consistency really matter.
What’s the best advice you’ve received?
I was told I wasn’t charging enough. That was a big mindset shift—realising that what I do has value and that people genuinely care about the moments I capture.
What are you focusing on next?
I’d like to do more newborn and maternity photography and less of the commercial work. That’s the area that really aligns with what I enjoy most.
How much growth came from proximity to the customer journey rather than a fixed business plan. Melissa didn’t expand into portraits because it was a trend—she expanded because her existing clients needed it. This is something that shows up often across Canberra businesses. When owners stay close to their customers over time, the next stage of growth tends to reveal itself naturally.
If you’re looking to capture meaningful milestones with someone who understands the full journey, Melissa’s work is well worth exploring.
