For Dean Hayes, European Garage wasn’t built from a business plan sitting on a desk. It was built after years of working in workshops, learning the trade, and gradually building the confidence to back himself.
Today, European Garage has become one of Canberra’s recognised independent European vehicle specialists, providing servicing, repairs and performance tuning for brands including Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot and other European makes. But behind the reputation is a story many business owners will recognise — long hours, financial uncertainty and the challenge of growing a business while supporting a young family.
European Garage specialises in servicing, repairing and performance tuning European vehicles, helping Canberra drivers maintain and improve some of the world's most recognised automotive brands.
Dean’s path into the industry wasn’t planned. His career progressed through Peugeot, Audi, transmission specialists and Mercedes-Benz dealerships, where he steadily moved into senior technical and leadership roles. Along the way he developed deep expertise in European vehicles and built a strong reputation within the industry.
The idea of starting his own workshop emerged after several conversations with other business owners and industry contacts who encouraged him to back his experience and reputation.
Unlike many businesses that begin with significant investment, European Garage started with little more than a toolbox, a hoist and a determination to make it work.
“You can’t build a reputation overnight. You build it one customer, one job and one long day at a time.”
Over the past seven years, the business has steadily grown into one of Canberra’s recognised independent European vehicle workshops. That growth has come through consistent service, technical expertise and word-of-mouth referrals from customers who value specialist knowledge and honest advice.
Alongside servicing and repairs, Dean also supports local charities and community organisations where possible, providing heavily discounted work to help keep their vehicles on the road.
Today, European Garage continues to focus on quality workmanship while investing in systems and processes that improve the customer experience and support future growth.
Tell us about your business and who you help.
European Garage is an automotive workshop specialising in European vehicles. We provide servicing, repairs and performance tuning, helping owners maintain and get the best from their vehicles.
Why did you start the business?
The opportunity came after years of working in dealerships and specialist workshops. A few people encouraged me to start something of my own and eventually the right opportunity came along. I started with a toolbox, a hoist and a workshop space and built it from there.
What are you most proud of?
The reputation we’ve built.
A few years into the journey, it became clear that European Garage had become one of Canberra’s recognised European vehicle specialists. Seeing the reviews and customer feedback has been incredibly rewarding.
What was the hardest part in the early days?
Working two jobs while building the business.
There were long periods of working during the day, then working nights and weekends in the business. At the same time, I was supporting a young family and managing the financial uncertainty that comes with starting a business from scratch.
What decision made the biggest difference to growth?
Hiring employees.
The biggest shift came when there was enough work to bring other people into the business. Every new hire felt like a risk at the time, but it allowed the workshop to continue growing and serving more customers.
What has become harder as the business has grown?
Customer communication.
As the volume of enquiries increases, responding quickly to everyone becomes more challenging. Many customers see the business as a larger operation than it is, when in reality a lot of communication still comes through me.
What are you working on improving right now?
Improving workflow efficiency and helping team members take on broader responsibilities.
The workshop already operates with digital systems, but there is a continued focus on streamlining processes and giving staff greater ownership across different parts of the business.
What would success look like over the next 12 months?
Keeping the workshop productive and ensuring technicians are consistently working on the right jobs at the right time.
Longer term, the goal is to continue growing the business in a sustainable way while creating more flexibility for the future.
One pattern that regularly appears across Canberra businesses is that growth often creates a different challenge than getting started.
In the early years, Dean’s challenge was generating enough work to justify the effort and risk. Today, the challenge is creating systems, capacity and team capability that allow the business to keep growing without becoming entirely dependent on one person.
It’s a transition many established business owners recognise as they move from being the business to leading the business.
