Agung Trading has been part of its industry for nearly five decades, building a reputation that’s widely recognised by those who operate within it. Led by Jason Palmer, the business supplies a broad range of smoking accessories to retailers across Australia. While the market around them has shifted significantly over time, the focus has remained consistent — maintaining quality, supporting customers, and adapting where necessary to keep the business moving forward.
Agung Trading operates as a national wholesaler, supplying a wide range of smoking accessories to retailers across Australia. With a product catalogue spanning thousands of items, the business has built a long-standing reputation as a trusted supplier within its niche.
Jason Palmer took over the business after already operating within the same industry, recognising both the strength of the existing operation and the opportunity to continue building on it. Rather than making sweeping changes, the focus was on preserving what already worked — maintaining product quality, supporting long-term customer relationships, and reinforcing the brand’s position in the market.
“Businesses last when customers know exactly what they can rely on you for.”
Over time, the external environment around the industry has shifted significantly. Changes in regulation, increased competition, and evolving retail dynamics have all influenced how the business operates. These pressures have required constant adaptation, with growing attention placed on managing costs, protecting margins, and maintaining operational efficiency.
Through these changes, Agung Trading has remained anchored in its reputation — continuing to deliver the consistency, reliability, and product quality that long-term customers have come to expect.
What do you do and who do you help?
We supply smoking accessories to retailers — everything a tobacconist would sell apart from tobacco.
Why did you take over the business?
I was already in a similar industry, and it was a natural progression to take it on and continue building it.
What are you most proud of?
Maintaining the reputation of the business and the quality standard over time.
What was one of the biggest challenges early on?
Managing stock levels without enough capital, and reinvesting to build that up to a workable level.
What’s a decision that made a big difference?
Not changing too much. The business was already working well, so the focus was on improving the obvious things without disrupting what made it successful.
What has become more difficult over time?
Dealing with staff and managing people, as well as navigating changes in the external environment.
What are you working on improving right now?
Profitability and how the business is structured to support it.
What does success look like over the next 12 months?
Improving overall performance — either through increased sales or reduced cost pressures.
One thing that stood out here was the discipline around not over-intervening in a business that was already working. It’s a position many Canberra business owners find themselves in — balancing the instinct to improve things with the reality that unnecessary change can create more risk than benefit. Knowing what to leave alone can be just as important as knowing what to change.
For retailers looking for a trusted supplier with a long-standing industry presence, Agung Trading continues to deliver consistency and quality.
